Care for a community garden space in Ranui Heights!

Do you live in Porirua East and want to grow something positive in your community? With My Garden Spot - Porirua East, you can take care of your very own garden patch at the Awatea Community Garden in Ranui Heights.

It's a simple, flexible way to grow kai (food), learn new skills, and contribute to a greener, healthier neighbourhood. Perfect for individuals, whanau/families, schools, community groups, or anyone who wants to reconnect with the whenua and give back to the local area.

What you'll do:

As a Garden Spot Keeper, you'll be responsible for your own section of the community garden. Your tasks might include:

  • Weeding and general garden upkeep
  • Planting vegetables, herbs, flowers or natives
  • Watering, mulching, and harvesting kai
  • Removing rubbish or debris
  • Reporting any damage or vandalism
  • Sharing ideas to improve the space
  • Supporting seasonal planting days and community working bees (if you're keen!)

No green thumb required - just a bit of time, care, and community spirit.

What you'll need:

  • A willingness to show up and tend your garden spot
  • Enthusiasm to learn, share, and grow with others

How it works:

We'll meet you onsite, walk through the space, and help you pick your spot. After that, you're free to garden at your own pace - solo, with friends, or as a whanau.

Why get involved?

  • Grow healthy food for yourself and the community
  • Meet others and build local connections
  • Spend time outdoors and learn new skills
  • Help make Porirua East more sustainable and resilient
  • Be part of something meaningful in your neighbourhood

Makara Peak Conservation Work Parties

Karori Role ID: 9116

The Makara Peak Supporters are made up of keen mountain bikers, runners, walkers and residents with a passion for Makara Peak and a vision to regenerate the native forest.

We have regular weekend volunteer work parties at Makara Peak for both conservation work and trail building and maintenance and are always looking for more volunteers

We provide the how-to, tools, gloves, witty humour, world class banter, food and drink. There's no need to register, just turn up and work for as little or as long as you like. Times and locations of upcoming projects are posted on the Makara Peak Supporters Facebook page.

Fence Checkers

Karori Role ID: 9106

Fence checkers help to maintain the biosecurity of Zealandia and integrity of our fence by inspecting the fence and surrounding areas. The role involves walking a designated section of the fence on the outside, looking for anything that could cause a biosecurity breach or harm to the sanctuary, and submitting a report.

We need volunteers who are prepared to make a regular commitment, for at least six months (and hopefully more!) who are physically fit and have an eye for detail. This role offers the opportunity to get fresh air and exercise, while being an integral part of the safety of our sanctuary. It is ideal for people living around our fence line or in the surrounding area.

Access to the sanctuary is not needed, so the fence check can be done at a time that suits the volunteer, on the day that they are rostered.

During the summer months it is possible to combine a weekday shift checking the fence with a normal work day but during winter, when the days are much shorter, it is not usually possible to do that, as the check needs to be completed when there is sufficient daylight.

If Sunday and Wednesday don't suit, or if you have a favourite part of the Park that you wish to care for, we can get you set-up with an Adopt-a-Spot site. This scheme encourages people to adopt their own spot in the park to look after, at any time convenient to them, rather than working in with the working bee schedule.
