Monday Food Rescue Volunteer

Monday Morning Food Rescue Driver & Volunteer - Help Save Good Food from Going to Waste Are you passionate about reducing food waste and helping your local community? If so, this could be the perfect volunteer opportunity for you.We are looking for a reliable and friendly volunteer to assist with our morning food rescue runs. This role plays an important part in ensuring perfectly good food is collected from local supermarkets and redistributed to community organisations that need it most.

About the Role

Based in Grenada North, this role involves driving our refrigerated truck and collecting donated food from several supermarkets. You will depart from our warehouse at 7.00am and visit:

  • New World Newlands
  • New World Churton Park
  • New World Porirua

During each collection you will carefully check donated food to ensure it has not passed its Use By date. After checking the items, you will box the food, photograph it using a KCA phone, weigh the stock, and upload the details into our online system and Facebook.

At New World Churton Park, you will also collect any empty banana boxes and record the number collected. These boxes are reused back at our warehouse to store non-food items.

Once you return to the warehouse, our team will assist with unloading the empty banana boxes. The rescued food will then be placed into refrigeration, and the relevant agencies will be contacted using the KCA phone so they can collect the food allocated to them.

About Our Organisation Kiwi Community Assistance (KCA) is a charity that works with supermarkets, businesses and community groups across the Greater Wellington region to rescue surplus food that would otherwise go to waste. We also provide the necessities of life such as clothing, footwear, linen and homewares to assist over 8,000 people per month.

All stock is redistributed to local foodbanks and community organisations, helping families while also reducing landfill.

Volunteers are not permitted to take donated goods home. We ask for a minimum three-month commitment, however you will not be required to volunteer on public holidays as we are closed.

Soup Team Lead Volunteer

Newtown Community Centre are on the look out for more volunteers who can help lead our Free Soup Friday team in the kitchen.

This role is responsible for preparing large batches of multiple soups, garlic bread and salads and instructing a team of volunteers to make kai for 30+ people.

Free Soup Friday is a weekly event at the community centre, where we provide a free lunch soup to whoever needs it. You will be helping to feed people while they come together for this communal meal.

The kitchen team starts cooking from 9am every Friday, to serve lunch from 1pm. We are aiming to bring on board enough volunteers who can work to a roster, alternating weeks that they are leading the soup team.

The driving team will follow a predetermined route making pickups along the way. They will deliver the labelled buckets from the collection points to the count team at the bank/Hospice.

    Vessel Tour Guide

    The SS Hikitia is a globally significant steam powered heavy lift floating crane berthed at the Taranaki Street Wharf, next to Te Papa. Having worked its entire life servicing Wellington Harbour, the Hikitia is due to celebrate 100 years of heavy lifting in 2026, and we are doing all we can to have the ship looking its best to mark the occasion!

    We are looking for volunteers who are interested in communicating the history of the ship to the general public as tour guides. The role will require the guide to escort small groups of guests (up to 10 people) around the ship highlighting the history of the vessel, how the steam machinery operates, and the many unique artefacts the vessel holds on board. Please note guides will be working in groups of 2 at a minimum for health and safety reasons.
