At Land Information Freehold Education (LIFE) Trust (Charitable Trust Registration: CC6335), we use Toi Whakapapa and personal stories — memories, art, family trees, parents’ homes, kitchens, backyards and letterboxes — to secure tino rangatiratanga (self-determination).

The Toi Whakapapa programme uses personal storytelling and creativity to connect rangatahi to their whakapapa and sense of belonging. Visual art is central to making the learning engaging and culturally rich for students across different year groups.

We are currently seeking a Māori artist who can create age-appropriate artworks for the programme.

Tasks include:

• Creating artworks based on five core family traditions: the family tree, parents’ homes, kitchens, backyards and letterboxes
• Creating them for three age groups: students aged 7 to 9, 11 to 12, and 13 to 18
• Providing artworks for use in both in-person and online learning

Special Skills Required:

• Professional visual art skills, with experience in illustrative or educational contexts
• A connection to Māori culture and whakapapa storytelling
• The ability to adapt your style for different age groups
• Confidence using common business technology, such as email, online meeting platforms and document sharing

Expected Personality: A Māori artist passionate about cultural education and identity. Collaborative and responsive to kaupapa-based direction.

Days, Hours for Role: Wednesday sessions from 11:00 to 1:00, with additional independent creative work time. This role runs for several months, for the duration of the initiative.

Training Provided: Programme context and creative briefs will be provided by the LIFE Trust team.
