Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne is a 225-hectare, fully fenced ecosanctuary where many of Aotearoa New Zealand’s rarest native species thrive in a predator-free environment. Supported by over 500 volunteers, we’re working towards a 500-year vision to restore nature and transform how people live with it.

Every visitor entering Zealandia plays a part in protecting the sanctuary’s unique wildlife. During our busy summer season, Biosecurity Volunteers help ensure visitors complete essential biosecurity checks and understand why these measures are so important.

This volunteer opportunity involves welcoming visitors, assisting with biosecurity screening processes, helping manage visitor flow into the sanctuary, and sharing Zealandia’s conservation story. Volunteers work alongside our Visitor Centre team, helping create a positive experience for visitors while supporting the protection of our precious native species.

We are currently looking for Biosecurity Volunteers from November 2026 through to the end of February 2027. Shifts are available from 10am-12pm or 12pm-2pm, and volunteers are asked to commit to one shift per week during this period.

What you’ll bring:
• Confidence interacting with a wide range of people
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, welcoming manner
• The ability to clearly explain biosecurity requirements and procedures
• Reliability and commitment throughout the summer season

You might be a great fit if you are:
• Passionate about conservation and protecting native wildlife
• Comfortable speaking with members of the public
• Friendly and approachable, while able to be firm when needed
• Enjoy working as part of a team

What’s in it for you:
• The opportunity to share Zealandia’s conservation story with visitors
• A meaningful role supporting the sanctuary’s biosecurity operations
• Experience working alongside our Visitor Centre team
• Time spent outdoors and around the sanctuary environment
• The chance to meet new people and connect with fellow volunteers

Training provided: You’ll receive training on Zealandia’s biosecurity procedures, visitor engagement, and the responsibilities of the role before starting your volunteer shifts.
