Our Meals on Wheels service supports older, ill, and disabled people living at home who would otherwise struggle to provide healthy meals for themselves. We need volunteers keen to deliver hot meals and a friendly chat to people in need in the following areas in Upper Hutt: Silverstream, Trentham, Wallaceville, Upper Hutt Central, Ebdentown, and Rimutaka. Shifts start and end at the meal pick-up point in Upper Hutt city centre and Heretaunga.

Important note: We currently need a Meals on Wheels (MoW) volunteer driver immediately for the Ebdentown delivery run on Mondays. For other delivery runs, we are looking for relief volunteer drivers. The volunteer roster is full for permanent shifts on other days. Relief drivers will receive the next available opportunity when a vacancy arises.

Time commitment: Meal pick-up time is 11.00am, Monday to Friday. A full delivery run takes roughly 1 - 1.5 hours. You can choose a day based on your availability.

What you'll need:

  • Ministry of Justice character verification
  • Two referees for character checks
  • A valid driver's licence
  • A vehicle with a valid registration (rego) and warrant of fitness (WoF)

Training Provided: We'll train you in how to carry out the role, and you'll be supported by Red Cross volunteers or staff members. You will receive induction training with a practice run on the first day. Once you are confident, you can start solo deliveries.

You'll need to follow our Health, Safety and Wellbeing policies and procedures, which will be advised during training.  For more information, please contact via Central.Area@redcross.org.nz
