Wellington Boys' & Girls' Institute (BGI) Challenge for Change supports young people to build confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging.
We're looking for volunteer mentors to work one-on-one with a young person aged 8–16, meeting for one hour each week throughout the programme. As a mentor, you'll provide consistent, positive adult support — listening, encouraging, and helping your young person build confidence and work toward goals related to school, wellbeing, or personal development, whether through shared interests, activities, or simply spending time together. It's a chance to build a genuine, trusting relationship — one that may grow into a lifelong connection.
After initial training, you'll set your own meeting times directly with your young person and supervisor.
What you'll bring:
- Patience, reliability, and trustworthiness
- An open mind and the ability to connect well with others
- Previous experience working with young people (preferred, not required)
You might be a great fit if you are:
- Warm, consistent, and genuinely interested in young people's wellbeing
- Comfortable building a relationship over time rather than a one-off interaction
- Able to commit to weekly one-hour sessions for the duration of the programme
Training provided: Weekly training workshops run over November to get you started, followed by bi-weekly (or as-needed) supervision with an experienced youth worker. Health and safety training is included, at no cost to volunteers. A police check is required, and expenses are reimbursed.
