Maritime Heritage Trust of Wellington manages and maintains SS Hikitia, a globally significant steam-powered heavy lift floating crane berthed at the Taranaki Street Wharf next to Te Papa. In 2026, Hikitia celebrates 100 years of heavy lifting, and the Trust is working to share this extraordinary piece of maritime heritage with Wellington and the world.

This volunteer opportunity involves escorting groups of up to ten visitors around SS Hikitia on Saturdays from 9am to 4pm, sharing the history of the vessel, how its steam machinery operates, and the unique artefacts held on board. Guides always work in pairs. Volunteers are needed at least twice a month, and full training is provided.

What you'll bring:
