About Volunteer Hutt | Te Awa Kairangi
As the only organisation in the Hutt Valley dedicated to both volunteerism and community sector development, Volunteer Hutt works alongside local groups to build stronger, more connected communities.
Led by Marcia Skinnon as a Kaupapa Māori organisation, Volunteer Hutt is committed to creating culturally safe and inclusive spaces that honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The exploration of tūao is central to our mahi, informing the way we support organisations, foster partnerships, and celebrate the contributions of tangata whenua and volunteers alike.
Through volunteer recruitment, professional development, organisational support, and community advocacy, we help local organisations thrive. Initiatives such as Te Aka Tūao demonstrate our commitment to innovation, collaboration, and strengthening community engagement across the Hutt Valley.

Volunteering Opportunities in the Hutt Valley
Provide free legal advice at drop-in sessions in Lower Hutt across general or specialist areas of law. Minimum one-year commitment.
Help run weekly GirlGuiding unit meetings in Lower Hutt during term time, planning programmes and supporting camps. ~2 hours per week.

Provide general handyman and maintenance support at Thumbs Up facilities in Porirua. Flexible hours, as-needed tasks.
Provide free information and advice to clients via phone, in-person, and online at CAB Petone. Morning and afternoon shifts available.

Heritage Guides
Welcome and guide visitors at Christ Church Taitā 1854 on Sunday afternoons, sharing the site's history. Training provided.

Board member
Join the Upper Hutt Housing Trust Board, contributing governance and strategic direction to support housing for vulnerable residents.
Advocate for and mentor housing clients, helping them navigate systems, build tenancy skills, and maintain stable housing. Training provided.
Mentor a family in the Hutt Valley, sharing life skills in home management, cooking, budgeting, and parenting. Weekly visits, full training.

Woodwork Support
Provide woodwork support at Thumbs Up activities in Porirua, helping adults with intellectual disabilities develop practical skills.
Accompany an older person on a weekly one-hour walk in the Hutt Valley, providing transport to suitable walking areas as needed.
